<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Are you finally getting started on skating something other than that longboard that you can't quite ever have fun on in your flat neighborhood with no hills?
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've been asked by many new and semi-retired skaters what board should they buy and set up. Check out my recommendations below. We’ll break these out by parts.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Decks

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can go for a new school symmetrical shape (posicle stick) which is great if you’re skating switch stance a whole lot, but I would lean towards a more directional shape like my Anti-Hero Jeff Grosso 9.25". This shape bridges the gap between old school and new school with a distinctive nose and tail, so you don’t have to stop and stare at it to figure it out.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’d recommend a deck 9 inches or wider. To give you some context, new school super technical flip trick generation of kids are skating 7.5 to 8.25” decks. For us old school cats who want to skate fast and flow with something wider with a longer wheelbase, a 9-inch deck would be just right.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here’s SoCal Skateshop’s selection of 9” decks:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?m=&c=434&l=product_list&sortby=id:desc
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To help narrow it down, here are some shapes I like:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=44405
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To save some money look at the house brand SoCal decks:
http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=87423

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Punk rock, hardcore company Anti-Hero from San Francisco is one of my favorites:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=86942

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There’s a company called Tired which is made for us tired old people who used to skate!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?m=&c=2099&l=product_list&sortby=id:desc
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At the end of the day, it’s all about what strikes a chord in you. Go with what you love just like when you were a kid.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Trucks
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The idea is to match the width of your deck to the width of your truck axles. For example, I use Independent 169mm (9.125”) trucks on my 9.25” Jeff Grosso board.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The best turning trucks are Indys and Ace! Look at Indy 169’s or Ace 55 trucks.
Not a deal breaker, but for a few bucks more you can lighter with hollow kingpins and axles on Indy Hollow Forged trucks:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=58926
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ace 55 trucks have a slightly narrower axle (8 ⅞”) compared to Indy 169s, and they also turn so friggin good!
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6903
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Wheels
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For smooth surfaces like the nice bowls and metal ramps popping up everywhere, go with a real hard wheel. Hardness is measured by the durometer scale. The higher the number the harder the wheel. For example, a 100a wheel is harder than a 90a wheel. Bones Skatepark Formula (SPF) wheels are my favorite.
Go with a larger diameter from 58-60mm for a faster roll.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Smaller wheels are great for more technical street skating therefore the more popular sizes being 50-55mm.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For outdoor cruising to the shops, pub, etc. you can try a softer wheel to help get you comfortable pushing around on less than perfect foot paths and blacktop streets. Try anything from 78a to 85a in hardness, and stick with 60-62mm size.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bearings
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bones <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Swiss bearings are the best...period. Though you probably don’t need anything that pricey ($55) at the moment.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1694
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I would recommend Bones Reds which are made in China instead of Switzerland and they’re only $18.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1694
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I just started skating a new set of the Bronson G2 bearings for the first time and they’re really good. Only $16.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1694
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Independent Abec 7 bearings are also pretty fast. They last a decent while too. Only $18.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=7027
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Risers

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You might need a set of hard riser pads under your trucks to prevent wheel bite. I love the loose trucks and being super low to the ground, but I caved and put in a set of ⅛” risers. You might want to experiment with ⅛” to ¼” depending on how heavy you are and how loose your trucks are. Pick and choose whatever color and brand you like. Don’t get the wedge (angled) risers unless you are racing slalom.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A friend of mine mentioned SoCal Skateshop ships to Australia at a decent postal rate. Prices are in US dollars, but still much cheaper than anything here in Australia.
Big box packaging includes orange valve extender and pink or orange valve cap. I thought I ordered the normal Campione, but I received the Campione TT which does not include a puncture protection layer. I'm now glad I did because they feel very supple and fast.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After riding Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubulars in a narrow 700 x 21 size I wanted to try a wider 700 x 25 tire. While I enjoyed the supple Vittoria with a latex inner, I decided to try a wider tire with a butyl rubber inner. I figure the wider size tubular will still give me a smooth and supple ride, and the butyl rubber inner will be a bit more convenient and durable in the long run.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Claimed weight for the Maxxis Campione TT 700 x 25 tubular tire is 265 grams. My scale measured 273 grams without the valve. Pretty close given the allowable differences in scale accuracy. For reference, t<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">he Vittoria Corsa Evo CX 700 x 21 tubular tire weighed 236 grams.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I dry-mounted the Maxxis tubulars on a clean Zipp 404 Firecrest rim and let sit at 145 psi for three days. This was necessary in order to ensure easier mounting later after all glue stages. I have found this imperative when mounting tubular tires with butyl rubber inners from Maxxis, Continental and Mavic. Vittoria tubular tires with latex inners only require 24 hours of dry-mounting to stretch them out. Mounting them is much easier and requires far less elbow grease.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After the final layers of glue were applied the tubs dried for 24 hours. Then I went out for a test ride. The wider 25mm tire with butyl rubber negated the advantages latex inners found in the narrower tubs. Pedaling straight down flat roads the tires picked up speed quickly and hummed along nicely. Cornering in tight crit courses and descending was phenomenal. The wider size allowed for lower tire pressure set at 92 psi rear and 89 psi front which translates into nice and smooth rolling all day. I weigh 140 pounds (64 kilograms). The wider size also makes it easier for me to keep my line straight when riding in strong gusty winds.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've only had two flats using the Vittoria Corsa Evo CX tubulars over the course of 15 months of hard riding rain or shine. Vittoria Pit Stop did the trick both times quickly and easily. The new Maxxis Campione TT 25mm tubulars have been rolling nice and easy with no issues and minimal signs of wear since February. It might be too early to call, but I'd say these are more durable than the Corsa CX tires. I've never been one to baby bikes or parts as I like to race and commute on the same gear. With that said I feel confident commuting, doing longer rides, and racing with my new Maxxis tires.
This newfound cycling enthusiast is named Dale. He owns a business selling insulation. I end up riding with him over the course of the year and log on lots of miles. The conversation is always pretty light on and off the bike...small talk mostly. We become friends.

One year later, we're at the park celebrating my distant cousin's daughter's birthday. The Australian Open tennis tournament also takes place during this time. While we were celebrating at a 2-year old's birthday along with other kids and families, I bring up tennis as a topic of conversation with Dale. Keep in mind I've ridden hundreds and hundreds of miles with him by now.

His exact words on this topic were, "Oh my God, Serena Williams is such a fucking gorilla!"

Dale added, "It's like evolution stopped with them!"

Then he immediately broke out in laughter with those around him. They carried on in the same direction with more obvious abusive racial slurs tacked on until the laughter heightened to an alarming crescendo.

I am absolutely appalled by what just happened. I could not believe it. I was taken aback and in shock as I walked away in silence full of disgust.

Months had gone by since I last spoke with Dale, or any of the other people in the circle who delivered the racist remarks. For some reason I decide to reach out to Dale to try and gain a clearer understanding of why that happened. Maybe it's because I've ridden approximately 1,800 miles with this person that I felt compelled to hear his thoughts.

Dale comes over to my place for beers and pizza. I ask why he said those things.

He didn't have much to offer other than, "It's alright because this is Australia and that's just how it is. It's not a bad thing."

Then I ask, "Dale, do you have any friends that are Aboriginal, African, or of Indigenous descent?"

He replied, "No."

Then I ask, "Where are the majority of Aboriginal and/or Indigenous people living in Melbourne?"

He replied with great conviction, "They're all drunk and homeless in the CBD (central business district)."

I think quietly to myself, "Whoah."

Maybe after asking if he liked cycling, I should have asked if he was a racist, or into crimes against children. You think you know somebody then all this gets laid out.

Should I continue to be friends with somebody after learning that he/she is into slinging racism like it's an awesome hobby? No thanks. Let me be extra clear about this - I'm saying 'no' to racism and 'no' to racist individuals like Dale and company.

Not long after, Dale's good friend, Wes, comes over for a beer. Wes is also close with my distant cousin as they all attended primary school together. He's communicated quite clearly on more than one occasion that he's the only one out of their circle of friends from their suburban high school who went on to pursue higher education at a university or college.

While discussing the last meeting I had with Dale, Wes tells me to be well aware that if and when the others in the circle of childhood friends from their suburban neighborhood hear of this, they will back up Dale and take his side. This inner circle includes my distant cousin, Rob, and Ash (a firefighter) among others.

Now I'm asking myself if that was a warning.

Here's the situation I am in. As an Asian American who was born and raised in a city brimming with diversity, Los Angeles, California, I see there's a chance I may be excluded from a circle of Australian adults who believe it's okay to make abusive racist remarks towards Aboriginal, Indigenous, African, and other people of color.

Wes then says, "Dale is not racist. He's a good bloke. He just thinks Serena Williams looks like a gorilla."

I'm thinking, "Riiiiight...gotcha."

Then we finished a couple beers and watched skate videos as if everything was alright. Suffice it to say, things were not right.

In case anybody asks again, I want to make it clear I choose to be excluded from any and all groups that condone and encourage racism.

They fall into the Giro line of footwear as an entry level model behind the Gauge and Code. I've seen cyclists rock these as full-time messengers through a New York winter and I've seen them out on the mud at cyclocross races. While they don't have the famed Easton EC70 or EC90 carbon outsoles, they're still stiff enough for my running and jumping around the park trying to navigate my own make-believe world championship cyclocross course. Plus they weigh in at 350 grams (size 42.5) which makes them 5 grams less than the top-of-the-line Giro Code.

Unless you're super pro, super wealthy, or one of those consumers who always has to buy the most expensive stuff for the sake of telling everyone at the coffee shop you bought the most expensive stuff, I don't see why you would spend almost twice the price for the Giro Code.

More importantly they're comfortable. I also own a pair of Giro ProLight SLX road cycling shoes. They're different beasts of a shoe, yet I feel Giro has certainly placed an emphasis on fit and comfort for both their road and MTB shoes across the line. It's evident indeed. You know what they say, "If the shoe fits, wear it." Yep, forget all the bells and whistles. This shoe does what it's suppose to do and they look good anyway. Keep it black yo! You can look forward to beating the crap outta these shoes and enjoying every bit of it.
